Police: Girls Missing After 'Chirping' On Cell Phone
POSTED: 6:15 pm PST March 27, 2006
UPDATED: 7:32 pm PST March 27, 2006
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Officials say two young Inland Empire girls are missing and they may have been lured away by a suspect who used something called chirping.
"They're not in trouble. Please contact us in anyway possible that they can," said mother Lisa Garrett.
NBC4 reports that 13-year-old Tiffany Bartholow and her 12-year-old cousin Rachelle Marques vanished from the family's back yard on Oakhurst Drive on Sunday evening.
"She just disappeared and Tiffany is not the type of person to just up and leave. It's not her nature," said father Gregory Bartholow.
Classmates of the girls told teachers and relatives that the pair had been chirping.
Relatives tell NBC4's Mary Parks that chirping is like communicating with someone through an Internet chat room on a cell phone.
"You go on there and you give your name and how old you are and what you're looking for. Other people respond to that. There's a lot of guys on there that say they're only 18, when really they're 35. There's a lot of sexual predators that get on those things," said brother Nick Delgado.
Family members tell NBC4 that they know little about the man Rachelle had been chirping or communicating with during the past month. Police are investigating and treating the case as a missing persons report.
"Whoever does have them, if it is through this chat line, please drop them off at the nearest police station. Please bring my daughter and niece back home," said mother Lisa Garrett.
Relatives and friends have put together a $1,000 reward for information leading to the safe return of both girls.
