Missing From Muskogee,
Body identified as missing Haskell woman
Authorities identified the body found Sunday stuffed inside a 55-gallon barrel that had drifted onto the banks of a farm pond as Sarah Kendall Smart.
Smart, 19, was reported missing Feb. 1. According to a report filed with the Muskogee Police Department, the teen was last seen the morning of Jan. 30.
The teenís mother, Laura Raney, said Smart caught a ride that morning from the familyís home in Haskell to Muskogee, where she had a doctorís appointment and a scheduled court appearance.
Smart appeared for neither.
Smartís skeletal remains were discovered Sunday by James Groover, who retrieved the steel barrel from a farm pond about five miles west of Haskell. The medical examiner used Smartís dental records to confirm the missing teenís identity.
Mom offers reward for missing daughter
By D.E. Smoot
Phoenix Staff Writer
The mother of a missing 19-year-old woman refuses to believe she may never see her daughter again and is offering a reward for information about her whereabouts.
My heartís broken, Laura Raney said about the disappearance of her daughter, Sara Kendall Smart. Itís been 90 days ...
Smart was last seen at about 8:30 to 9 a.m. Jan. 30 near the McDonaldís restaurant at 32nd Street and Okmulgee Avenue. Raney said the teen had caught a ride from Haskell to Muskogee with her stepfather, Jerry Raney.
Laura Raney said her daughter had an appointment with a doctor at 10:30 a.m. and was supposed to appear that afternoon for a preliminary hearing at the Muskogee County District Courthouse. Smart appeared for neither.
Muskogee Police Investigator Ginny Bemo said she received a couple of tips during the first two weeks in February from callers who claimed Smart had been seen around town. Neither tip produced any leads, Bemo said. Since then, the trail has grown cold.
