Body of Stone Phillips' aunt found - 9/9/2006 3:47:00
PM -0400
DALLAS, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- The body of Doris Phillips, an aunt of "Dateline NBC" anchor Stone Phillips, has been found in an abandoned farmhouse south of Dallas, police said Saturday.
An unidentified suspect in police custody led sheriff's deputies to the body in Bardwell, about 40 miles south of Dallas, KXAS-TV reports.
Police offered no other details.
The 81-year-old woman was reported missing from her north Texas home July 26.
WAXAHACHIE, Texas 9-13-06 - A 49-year-old man was charged with aggravated robbery and kidnapping in connection with the death of the elderly aunt of "Dateline NBC" anchor Stone Phillips.
Miguel Arciba, who had known Doris Phillips for several years, was charged Monday, three days after he led investigators to her body in an abandoned farmhouse near her home, Ellis County Sheriff's Lt. Clint Tims said.
Arciba is accused of abducting Phillips, 81, but he denied killing her and told investigators that another person told him where to find the body, Tims said. He said other arrests were possible.
Phillips was reported missing from her Reagor Springs home, about 30 miles south of Dallas, on July 26.
Arciba, who remained jailed Tuesday on $250,000 bond, was arrested Sept. 3 after he was linked to an item taken from Phillips' home, authorities said. His parents had worked for years for Phillips and her late husband, according to Tims.
A reward of $25,000 has been offered by an anonymous donor for information leading to the safe return of Doris Phillips, the Reagor Springs woman reported missing last week.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation being conducted by the sheriff’s office with the assistance of the Texas Rangers has been ongoing since Phillips was reported missing at 12:30 a.m. July 26.
"Right now, we’re just following any kind of lead we get," said sheriff’s Capt. Danny Williams, saying that rewards often produce important leads and information. He’s hopeful that this will be such a case.
"It might help," he said, adding, "I hope it does."
Doris Phillips is 5 feet tall, weighs 118 pounds, has brown eyes, grey hair, glasses, and brown spots on her forehead. She was last seen by her family around 10 a.m. July 24, and spoke with one of her sons on the telephone at 10 a.m. July 25. Phillips lived alone, and her vehicle was found at her house on Old Church Road.
The search for 81-year-old Doris Phillips in the area around her home was called off Friday, but the investigation continues full force for the woman reported missing early Wednesday morning, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office officials said.
In an interview late Friday afternoon, sheriff’s Lt. Clint Tims said investigators do not believe Phillips is still in the area surrounding her home.
This morning, it was a real extensive search on foot, he said. I think all of that has been exhausted.
Now, the sheriff’s office, assisted by the Texas Rangers, is working to track down the many leads investigators have received during the past five days.
We’re following up on every lead that we’ve got, said Tims, adding that the disappearance is still being investigated as foul play.
Ten local agencies and more than 100 volunteers combed the area surrounding Phillips’ home on Old Church Road near the Texas Motorplex early Friday morning.
Searchers walked the area in gridline patterns looking for any sign of Phillips, but as the hottest hours of the day approached, sheriff’s Capt. Danny Williams said the searchers planned to break for the afternoon due to the high temperatures.
We’ve already had several people who’ve had heat exhaustion, Williams said late Friday morning, adding that searchers were asked to check in and out as well as travel in groups for their safety.
The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office sought public help at a press conference late Thursday afternoon in the ongoing search and investigation for 81-year-old Doris Phillips, the Reagor Springs resident reported missing early Wednesday morning.
We’re asking that anyone who has seen her or who knows anything to contact us, said sheriff’s Capt. Danny Williams.
Williams reported that the search and information from neighbors has not led to any new discoveries, but that a new search was set to begin late Thursday.
We are starting a new search on ground, we are starting a new search in the air, he said, later adding, We’re not going to stop on this ’til we find her.
Doris Phillips’ son, John Phillips, also issued a plea Thursday evening through local media to his mother.
Mom, please hang on. God’s in control, he said, adding, The best efforts are being put forth right now to bring you home.
