The family and friends of a missing West Charleston teenager are offering a $10,000 reward for any information which leads to his discovery or whereabouts.
Nathan Currie was last seen on July 23 and was reported missing July 26 when his blue Chevrolet Lumina was found abandoned at a cemetery near his apartment on Main Street in West Charleston.
"We are just trying to hear something," said Currie's uncle, Keith Austin, in explaining why the reward is being offered. "We want to get the word out ... hoping to get someone to talk. He did not just disappear."
Austin, who owns a rubbish pickup service where Currie worked during summers, said the money was raised by family and friends.
He said the last time he saw his nephew was three or four days before he was missing.
Austin said he has spoken to Currie's friends about what may have happened.
"Everyone has a theory," he said referring to his nephew's friends. "It's very unusual [he has been gone so long]. He has been gone three weeks. He has never been gone for more than a day. No one has heard from him or seen him."
State police Troop B is in support of the reward. Bureau of Criminal Investigation Detective Lt. Leo Bachand said the reward may work, or it may not. With rewards, success comes on a case-by-case basis, he added.
"We're still plugging away and following the leads coming in," Bachand said.
Since Currie was reported missing, police divers have searched a pond near where his car was found.
Police have also searched around his residence, family and community members have searched numerous areas and canine teams have participated in the search.
"We know where he is not," Bachand said of Currie. "We're pulling out all the stops."
When his car was found, a license plate had been ripped off and was discovered about 80 yards away. The ignition keys were in the vehicle.
Bachand said there have been rumors Currie may have been involved with drugs, but they have not been verified.
Currie is 6 feet tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He may have a shaved head or a flat-top haircut. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.
Staff writer Taylor Reed contributed to this story.
