MILWAUKEE Police believe that two boys missing for nearly a week are still in Milwaukee, and they pleaded with residents Saturday to come forward with even the smallest bit of information.
"It could be the piece of information... or the snippet of information that helps us solve this case," Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said Saturday at a news conference. "If you've been considering calling us with this information, if you are afraid, now is the time to call."
Friends Quadrevion Henning, 12, and Purvis Virginia Parker, 11, disappeared while playing near their homes March 19. They live within one and a half blocks of each other.
Family members have said they suspect the boys were taken by someone and the FBI has brought in child abduction specialists to help. But Schwartz said again Saturday that police have no evidence to lead them to believe a crime has been committed.
As searchers went door-to-door again in the boys' neighborhood, Schwartz said they are taking the investigation day by day and remain optimistic because tips continue to come in.
"We will continue this effort as long as we believe we are accomplishing something," she said.
Schwartz said investigators have combed through hundreds of tips and have weeded out the impertinent ones over the search that entered its seventh day.
"We are now focusing on the good information and we have a very strong focus," she said, but declined to elaborate.
Police have received tips from all over the nation, but think the boys are still in Milwaukee, she said.
Schwartz urged people to call a national tip line with any information, even if they wanted to remain anonymous.
"I know somebody's got them," said Garry Henning, the grandfather of missing 12-year-old Quadrevion Henning.
Angela Virginia, the mother of 11-year-old Purvis Virginia Parker, said she believed the same thing that the boys wouldn't have wandered away on their own.
"I believe they've been forced against their will," said Virginia, as she wiped tears from her eyes. "He may be missing for now, but soon he'll be home."
A reward fund is now up to $35,000, Schwartz said. Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green also pledged $3,000 from the Ahman Green Foundation.
Schwartz said some of their efforts to get information about the boys dispersed included:
Local businesses donated materials to put up 80 billboards with the tip line and the boys' photos.
The regional Pizza Hunt office is putting flyers on pizza boxes.
The U.S. Postal Service and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children will deliver more than 54,000 fliers with the boys' information to area homes and businesses.
Earlier in the day, more than 50 friends, relatives and neighbors marched and searched in the neighborhood putting up fliers on homes and parked cars.
March 26th -
MILWAUKEE (AP)- Police said Sunday the search for two boys who disappeared a week ago was turned into a criminal investigation.
Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz wouldn't reveal what prompted them to treat the case differently, saying it would compromise the investigation.
The change did not come because of one detail, she said, but an "amassing of information" through police canvassing the neighborhood, tips and leads.
Quadrevion Henning, 12, and Purvis Virginia Parker, 11, were last seen around 3:30 p.m. March 19, when they asked Henning's grandfather whether they could play basketball at a nearby park.
While there are many unanswered questions about the case, investigators had no reason to believe the boys were outside of Milwaukee, she said.
Multiple agencies were participating in the investigation, which was concentrated in the boys' neighborhood Sunday, Schwartz said.
Family members have said they suspect the boys were taken by someone and the FBI has brought in child abduction specialists to help.
"I am feeling the same as I did the first day," Purvis' grandmother, Cynthia Fox, told The Associated Press. "I just want him home."
Fox said family, friends and neighbors were searching the neighborhood checking garbage cans, knocking on doors and checking cars.
Police suspect there are individuals who know more than they are saying and Schwartz urged anyone with information to come forward. There's a reward of at least $35,000, she said.
