MILWAUKEE Eleven days after two boys vanished on their way to play basketball on a Sunday afternoon, police are puzzled, neighbors are alarmed, and some family members believe the children were abducted.
Quadrevion Henning, left, and Purvis Parker have been missing since March 19.
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Friends Quadrevion Henning, 12, and Purvis Virginia Parker, 11, got permission on the afternoon of March 19 to head to the playground at Hampton Elementary School a couple blocks from their homes in northwest Milwaukee. They haven't been seen since.
A criminal investigation is underway, but there have been no substantial leads, Anne Schwartz, spokeswoman for the Milwaukee Police Department, said Wednesday. "The passage of time is not good ... but we have no hard evidence to indicate that a crime has been committed."
Dennis Frazier, Henning's uncle, said family members don't believe the boys ran away. "It's just not them. They've got good homes, they never ran away before, never got into arguments that day or that week," he said. "These boys were abducted and right now are being held against their will."
Angela Virginia, Purvis' mother, said, "It's getting kind of hard" as the days go by without news of her son. He's "a pretty typical 11-year-old," she said, but she's certain he didn't run away.
She said Purvis likes to draw, and she sometimes calls him "Artist." He's a fifth-grader at a school that specializes in art and music. Quadrevion, who's usually called Dre (pronounced dray), is an A-student in the sixth grade and wants to join the military like his father, Trevor Henning, and his grandfather, Frazier said.
Suzette Harris, manager of Bill & Pat Tap, a bar two blocks from the Henning home, also lives in the neighborhood and said she's worried. "You read about this kind of thing in the news," she said. "But it's right here, and it's so close to home that it's kind of scary. Is this isolated, or is it going to happen again?"
It's unusual for two boys to disappear, said Joann Donnellan of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. "Anything is possible. They could be injured and have no way of communicating that."
Police, with help from state investigators, the FBI and scores of volunteers, have searched the area with dogs and divers and gone door-to-door interviewing neighbors. "Missing" posters are up throughout the neighborhood of single-family homes. Frazier said family members have been interviewed by police.
"Even though the sun goes down and you know it's another day that these boys are missing, everybody's spirits are up," Frazier said.
Frazier and Virginia said the boys are strong enough to survive whatever they're enduring. "I know he's missing me," Virginia said. "I've got enough strength because I know that he can overcome anything."
